James Henry Steward of  406 Strand,London. This clockmaker, watchmaker and jeweller (i.e. retail jewellers shop) was working in London from about 1856 to about 1892.

 A two draw telescope shown partially open and closed, signed on the inner draw. Length overall 25”, closed 17½“. Objective diameter 1. 5”. Missing  lens hood but in good working order. Leather clad body/ great condition/ might benefit some antique wax polish to leather.

James Henry Steward was primarily an optician and founded his business in 1852. The company produced a large range of items for military use and advertised in their catalogues that they produced instruments for ‘Reconnoitring, Sketching, Night Marching, Signally, Gun Laying’. They were well thought of with their work to such a standard that they were opticians to ‘The British & Foreign Governments, the National Rifle Associations of England, India, Canada & the Colonies and the National Artillery Association.
